Counterfeit goes gluten free

Our Counterfeit beer is going gluten free!

There are two ways of brewing gluten free beer. We’ve chosen to stick with our original tried and tested Counterfeit recipe and add an enzyme at the start of the fermentation process to break down the gluten protein.

Our Counterfeit was tested in a laboratory and the gluten analysis was <10ppm. The legal requirement in the UK in order to be labelled gluten free is <20ppm. The method used was gliadin testing which is UKAS accredited for beer. You’ll still see Barley, Wheat and Oats listed in bold as allergens on our labels. The beer is legally gluten free and suitable for coeliacs because the added enzyme has broken down the gluten protein by more than the required amount as demonstrated by our recent <10ppm gluten analysis.

If you’d like to know more then Coeliac UK have a great explainer which goes into more detail:

How is gluten free beer made?

Our gluten free Counterfeit is already on keg at The One Bull and we’ll be rolling it out to our pubs and other customers over the next few weeks so look out for gluten free stickers on the pump clips soon.

If you know our pubs, then you may know that we’ve been working on broadening our gluten free offering on the food side too:
